Water Pollution
Water can become polluted in many ways:
- the escape of raw sewage,
- the illegal discharge of industrial effluent,
- through natural phenomena such as earthquakes and volcanoes, and
- chemical spillage from tankers in a road accident
There are two categories for the causes of water pollution , point source and non point source .
Point source pollution occurs when a contaminant from an identifiable source such as industrial discharge or spillage enters a waterway.
Non-point source pollution occurs when no single source can be identified. This could be caused by pesticides from agricultural lands for example.
Resultant Problems
Water is our life blood and without it, the universe and all living organisms would cease to function.
Water pollution affects health , the environment and for companies fined for releasing unwanted effluent into the waterways, can be financially crippling.
Pollution prevention methods are the solution but when these fail, then the cause of the problem has to be detected, isolated and ultimately resolved.
